August 2019 Forecast

We made it to August! Mercury is direct, and we don’t have eclipses this month. Welcome. Take a minute to catch your breath.

August is, on the whole, drier and somewhat easier than July. The elemental vibe is overwhelmingly earth and fire. The spaceweather has the potential to get a little spicy, but it’s got a fun, playful feel to it. By the time we move into Virgo season at the end of the month, the energy is grounded but not static: as we head into “school season,” it’s an organized, innovative, future-focused kind of earthiness.

Right now it’s Leo season though, so it’s still very much summer – enjoy! Venus in Leo squares Uranus in Taurus on the 2nd. This is one of the spicier aspects, as relationships are potentially shaken up, but it can also mean a welcome change of pace. (Mercury repeats the same square from Leo on the 11th). The sun and Venus in Leo make lovely aspects to Jupiter in Sagittarius on the 7th, 8th, and 14th, making these days wonderful for fun in the sun. Mercury follows suit, echoing this sense of joy, on the 21st.

Jupiter stations direct in Sagittarius on the 11th – and though outer planet retrogrades are not as significant as those of inner planets like Mercury, it will be good to have our major benefic fully functioning! It’s worth noting that Mercury moves back into Leo on the 11th, where they will be creative, performative, optimistic, and authoritative—in a more positive way then they were during last month’s retrograde.

Uranus stations retrograde on the 11th, which is not a big deal, but if you have natal planets or points between 2-6 degrees of Taurus or other fixed signs (Leo, Aquarius, or Scorpio) – your exciting Uranus transit is coming back around for another go.

Venus and Mars are traveling together starting mid-month in Leo and then continuing into Virgo where they’ll meet. These are the cosmic lovers, and their conjunction fuses the energy of the masculine and feminine into the whole. This is a passionate alignment. On the 15th, we have our full moon at 23 degrees of Aquarius, opposing Venus and Mars in Leo. Passion is in tension with intellect. We will have to reason our way through something here.

Mars begins the shift from fiery Leo season into focused Virgo season, moving into the sign of the maiden on the 18th. In this sign, Mars is discerning and hyper-organized. Venus follows on the 21st, and meets Mars here exactly on the 24th. Venus is in her fall in this sign, where Virgo’s characteristic focus on health and improvement is always in conflict with her love of luxury. However, Venus and Mars together here are sexy! The sun moves into Virgo on the 23rd. A series of trines from Venus, Mars, and the sun to Uranus in Taurus on the 26th -29th gives us hippie-era vibes for the end of August: earth, peace and free love.

On the 29th, Mercury joins the rest of the planets in Virgo. This is the sign of Mercury’s rulership and exaltation, so it’s a strong placement for them. In Virgo, Mercury is especially intelligent, curious, discerning, analytical, and can be witty (if cutting). We end the month with a dark moon in Virgo, conjunct Mercury, Venus, and Mars, and trine Uranus in Taurus. This is a Big Earth Mood. There is a lot of potential for healing in this lunation. Healing of the earth, healing our bodies, and healing any earthy parts of life (like money, food, or sex) are all possibilities with this one.

Libra New Moon: Banishing Obstacles to Love

This new moon is at 15.48 Libra on Monday, October 8th at 11:47 pm

Tonight’s new moon in Libra is square Pluto in Capricorn, symbolizing a need to re-balance power. This moon is ruled by Venus, currently retrograde in Scorpio. During this cycle in Scorpio, Venus wants us to re-acquaint ourselves with our own power. We give away our power when we decide that we don’t “deserve” love. This is a form of giving power away to others by allowing the larger culture to define who “deserves” love, by letting past partners define the type of love we “deserve”, and by leaving it up to someone else to find us and love us when we are not loving ourselves. In the spirit of helping you to reclaim some of your power, here’s a visualization from visionary activist astrologer Caroline Casey, shared through her book Making the Gods Work for You.

Venus likes for us to banish the past before invoking the future. Right now, close your eyes and rapidly summarize in your mind all of the miserable, wretched love affairs you have ever had. But do not spend too long on it. In your mind’s eye, put them all in a silver ball. Now move the silver ball way out into the horizon in front of you, until it completely disappears. Next, imagine a copper ball on the far horizon where the silver ball disappeared. It is the earned gift of appropriate equal love. The copper ball comes toward you and surrounds you with its warm light, which settles at the base of your spine. There it forms a beautiful copper serpent that curls and swirls up your spine and hovers over your head.
— Caroline Casey, Making the Gods Work for You

By banishing what was miserable about your past relationships, you remove some unconscious obstacles. Those old relationships and past partners no longer have the power to block the gift of love. Reclaim your personal power and make room for the love you want as we begin this Venus retrograde-ruled lunar cycle.
