September is a month for practical magic and the most sensible of medicines. Virgo season brings people back to the basics of health: quality food, true rest, and attention to the body’s needs. What natural, free medicine is best for you this season? Sunshine? Long walks? Herbal tea? Virgo specializes in this type of earthy healing. A little bit goes a long way.

We don’t just have the sun in Virgo this season, we have Uber Virgo: the sun, Mars, Venus, and Mercury (ruler of Virgo) are all here, making conjunctions with each other at the beginning of the month. Practical wisdom is a kind of magic of its own. This is a month for earthy realism and getting things done. Discern priorities, break big goals down into smaller goals, manage your time, crush your self-care routine, and whip every detail into shipshape this September.

Because we have all of these personal planets in Virgo, they make a series of friendly trines to Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn. The Saturn-Pluto Capricorn conjunction is a long-term transit of destruction and reconstruction, and our little Virgo helpers are here to manage that messy project. From September 1st through the 19th, we’ve got a focus on the details. What do you need to reconstruct, and how? Little by little, we get the work done. Saturn and Pluto like long-term visions and dedication.

We’ve also got Virgo planets squaring Jupiter in Sagittarius from the 2nd - 12th. Jupiter is ambitious and optimistic: he loves a BIG dream. Virgo is more practical. Remember that your big plans have to be broken down into smaller goals. Every little accomplishment on the way to a major dream is worth celebrating. You may feel especially ambitious about how much you want to get done this month. Make sure you create achievable small steps for yourself – that’s how the magic really happens.

At the same time, from the 4th – 14th, our Virgo planets are opposing Neptune in Pisces, helping us to dispel illusions and get realistic. Ideals are wonderful visions, but reality rarely lives up to them. How can you improve your life and still accept the flaws? Perfectionism is a trap: if we wait for the perfect time, or expect perfect results, we end up with a lot of nothing. Make imperfect strides toward improvement. Recognize when you’re serving a delusion. Better to serve yourself with the truth and do what can be done than to labor in service of a lie.

This all comes to a head with our full moon at 21.05 Pisces on September 14th (at 12:33 am in New York). This moon is conjunct Neptune, sextile Pluto, opposing Mars, Venus, and Mercury in Virgo, and square Jupiter in Sagittarius. So: all of the everything. All of the aforementioned Virgo-earth vibe themes are in play with this lunation. As our September harvest moon in the sign of the fishes, this makes me think of fish as a symbol of abundance. We get to harvest that abundance that comes with smart planning, attention to detail, and small steps towards big goals. This is a wonderful moon for wishes and dreams come true—provided you’re willing to work for them.

After the moon is at its fullest, on the morning of September 14th, both Mercury and Venus enter the sign of Libra. Libra is a sign of justice, beauty, and harmony. Venus rules in this sign, so she is right at home in this airy domain of art and ideas. Mercury in Libra is apt to speak with pleasant words and/or address ideas of justice. Mid-month, after the full moon, we begin to shift from a season of hard, grounded work to a season of balance. It’s still Virgo season until the Fall Equinox on the 23rd, though, when the sun moves into Libra.

On the 18th, Saturn stations direct at 13.54 degrees of Capricorn. This is another check-in about your Saturn lessons, especially if you have personal planets or points around 14 degrees of Capricorn, Aries, Cancer, or Libra. How grounded are you right now? What do you still need to work for? Saturn is a fan of the slow, steady climb to the top. Ambition meets practicality here.

On the 21st, Jupiter squares Neptune. This outer-planet aspect has been in play throughout 2019, and this is the third and last exact square of the year. Look back to January 13th and June 16th of this year for clues. This aspect is about optimism, expansion, ideals, dreams, and illusions. In the best-case scenario, Jupiter and Neptune push us to seek out our dreams—hopefully with an earthy, Capricorn-style plan for manifesting them into reality. At the final square, after all the Virgoan discernment that is happening this month, check in with your big goals. There is still time to adapt the plan before the end of the calendar year.

We have some squares from Mercury and Venus in Libra later this month. From September 22nd through the 26th, they’ll be busy squaring Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn as well as the moon’s nodes. Given that we’re in such a heavy Capricorn period, with the nodes and eclipses along the Cancer-Capricorn axis, this is a reminder of that longer project of re-organizing big structures to move toward nurturing. Mercury and Venus in Libra care very much about fairness, so these are aspects that seek models of justice. With sextiles to Jupiter in Sagittarius around the same time (on the 24th and 28th), these two become legal-minded intellectuals, full of big ideas for fighting the good fight.

Saturn makes his exact conjunction with the south node in Capricorn on the 28th, reminding us of all the work left still to do: some old traditions need updating, and some aspects are worth keeping. Face your demons. We have a dark moon the same day, at 5.20 Libra, opposite Chiron in Aries. We end the lunar cycle with a lunation that is about facing dark truths and healing the wounds of toxic masculinity. Healing all aspects of ourselves—those that are termed masculine and those that are termed feminine in a binary culture—ensures that we remember our true wholeness.
