This new moon is at 27.27 degrees of Virgo on Wednesday, September 20th at 1:30 AM EST.
It's Virgo season, and beside the sun and the moon we have three other planets in Virgo: Mercury, Mars, and Venus. The moon makes one strong aspect, opposing Chiron in Pisces. Chiron is about our wounds, and in Pisces, especially emotional and spiritual wounds. Pisces, unfathomable, encompasses everything. But it's overwhelming to try healing all your wounds at once. That's why Virgo focuses on the particular. A doctor stitching up a wound so that it heals perfectly does so one stitch at a time.
While I was thinking about Virgo energy, I was reminded of The Magicians series by Lev Grossman.
The main character, Quentin Coldwater, attends Brakebills, a college for magicians. Brakebills students are assigned a discipline according to their talents, but Quentin doesn't discover what his discipline is until after he's graduated. At the time of discovery, he's disappointed. He has a special touch for the mending of small objects. Nothing big or fancy. Just the ability to repair small items, like a teacup, using magic. But it's this ability that later allows him to accomplish something enormous: repairing and rebuilding an entire world with his trademark precision and care.
Our collective wounds right now feel overwhelming. It seems like the entire world needs healing. It's hard to know where to begin. Virgo's medicine is practical healing. We can start small, mending one small piece of the larger whole at a time. Our culture prefers big gestures, big voices, big everything. Getting the small stuff done isn't glamorous. But doing one thing at a time is the only way to reach any goal. Some people get things done by marching for justice with a megaphone, but there is always much less glamorous work to be done in the background of any movement: stamping envelopes with requests for donations, researching political actions, organizing meetings, answering emails, editing outreach materials. This is the Virgo work of mending.
With enough patience, the quiet mending of small objects can lead to the creation of entire worlds. At this new moon, whether you're healing your own wounds, helping someone else to heal theirs, mending a piece of your own art, or making home repairs, remember that it's all done one stitch at a time.
