Capricorn Full Moon: Make it Real

Full Moon in Capricorn: Tuesday, July 19 at 6:57 PM EST

The full moon tonight is at 27 degrees of Capricorn, the sign of ambition, discipline, and competence. We began this cycle with a new moon in Cancer, Capricorn's polar opposite: the sign of feelings and caring. All of the signs in the zodiac function with this tension of complementary opposites. Cancer is the sign of home and family, the necessary foundation for Capricorn to achieve worldly success. Complementary signs need each other for support. They're two sides of the same coin; yin and yang.

Even though Cancer and Capricorn balance each other, it struck me when I was making Pinterest boards for Capricorn and it's ruling planet Saturn the other day, how completely different they really are. The Pinterest board for Cancer is all soft colors, water, welcome mats, families, and summer ice cream cones. By contrast, Capricorn's board is powerful, in a palette of blacks, maroons, and grays, full of executives in impeccable suits and people scaling the peaks of rocky mountains. The marble halls of Capricorn are impressive to be sure, but compared to Cancer's welcoming beach house, they can feel quite chilly. Ruled by Saturn, the planet of responsibility, Capricorn accepts no excuses. People born under this sign often work their way steadily to high places, and they take pride in earning every bit of their success.

Capricorn and Saturn get a bad rap for their unyielding emphasis on ambition and discipline. The archetypal Capricorn out of balance is Scrooge, a miser without family who only cares about revenue. But a Capricorn in balance is honest and admirable, a prominent and well-respected member of his community with a down-to-earth sense of humor. If Cancer cares deeply about a cause like curing Alzheimer's, Capricorn is the sign that takes practical steps to further that cause by building a foundation that contributes to Alzheimer's research. This is the kind of balance you want to emulate, as you take responsibility for your life and values.

New moons are good times to set monthly intentions and initiate. Two weeks later, at the time of the full moon, what was begun starts to come into fruition -- the first deadlines hit, there's an unexpected kink to work out, people are suddenly behaving more intensely. This particular full moon in Capricorn is one that asks you to put your money where your mouth is. Whatever you decided you cared about most at the new moon in Cancer, now is the time to do the work. It's time to take responsibility for our goals by working toward them in practical ways. So when you're looking up at the full moon tonight, remember what you care about. Then, do something to make it happen. Do something to make it real.
