Multipotentialites and the Grand Mutable Cross

Have you been feeling restless? Has there been a lot of change and uncertainty lately? At the Gemini New Moon on June 5th, the moon and Venus formed a grand mutable cross in the sky, aspecting Jupiter in Virgo, Saturn in Sagittarius, and Neptune in Pisces. This cross is in effect for the entire Gemini moon cycle (until the next new moon on July 4th). You may feel your energy being pulled in four different directions right now. Grand crosses are "doer" aspects -- they're not easy to work with, but if you find a way to integrate disparate energies, you can make things happen. This cycle, we're being asked to embrace change, learn quickly, adapt, and work toward big dreams. This influence is especially strong for those with planets or points in mutable signs. It looks like this:

That big red X with the square around it is the grand mutable cross. It's a potent influence for me, as it lines up exactly with the grand mutable cross in my birth chart (a rare occasion). So when a newsletter sent Emilie Wapnick's TED Talk to my inbox last week, I thought it was perfect timing. I've always been someone with multiple interests who loves variety and resists specializing in one field. But I didn't know that other people like me were thinking critically about this romanticized cultural idea of the "one true calling" and the narrowly focused life. When I watched this talk, I felt like finally someone was voicing an idea I had always known to be true, but had difficulty expressing. Apparently there are whole communities of people who design their lives around many different interests: Polymaths, Renaissance People, Scanners, Multi-passionates. Emilie Wapnick calls them Multipotentialites. If that sounds like you, watch her short talk.

Even if you don't identify as a multipotentialite, this is the energy of the moment: buzz, change, sudden interests and sudden boredom. If you're naturally given to it, it's a fantastic time. If you prefer routines and predictability, and/or you are a specialist in one area, try to exercise a few of your polymath muscles in this cycle. You'll get more of what you want by adapting to the energy than resisting it.

Mercury in Gemini will heighten the effect of this Grand Cross once again around the full moon in Sagittarius next week (June 20th). Get ready for another wave of change.

I'd love to hear from you in the comments below!

  • Do you identify as a multipotentialite (or polymath/scanner/Renaissance person)?
  • In your birth chart, what planets or points do you have in the mutable signs of Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces?
